The Power of Delegating: How It Can Fuel Business Growth

Updated: Feb 1

How many of you spend time on the weekend scaling wobbly ladders cleaning the outside windows of your house because it was on the to do list this week? I'm going to guess that unless you are a professional window cleaner or some mad cleaning enthusiast with a death wish, the answer would be zero....

Walking the dog, cleaning the house, Tescos delivering shopping straight to your door- even childcare we delegate so much in our personal lives to free up time to focus on other priorities. If someone else can do it better, quicker, cheaper or get rid of the tasks we loathe or dominate our time, if finances allow, we do it. I have a wonderful woman who cleans and keeps my house in good order twice a week so I can focus on growing my own SME and my family. Life before "Super Mave" was a frantic blur of cleaning, sketchy billable hours, and yelling at my kids and other half for making messes that I didn't have time to sort. It was overwhelming, exhausting and stressful. (Mave, if you are reading this I LOVE YOU!NEVER LEAVE ME!!!)

When we are happy enough to hand over the reins to people in our personal lives, why do we feel so differently when it comes to delegating business related tasks?

Starting an SME takes, courage, passion and belief. Let's be honest, if you are anything like me, my business is my fourth child. I pour my heart, soul, time and money into My Outsourced Assistant, the fruits of which have brought me happiness, satisfaction, further growth and financial reward. It can be difficult to hand over something so precious.

The facts of the matter in my humble opinion are as follows:

  1. There are only 24 hours in one day

  2. The work/ home life balance is important (Burnout is a real thing)

  3. It is hard to be efficient at the admin part of running a business AND have the time to focus on the activities/ services you need to provide to make your SME grow.

It can be daunting when considering delegating and after years of working alongside other business owners and on boarding clients, the biggest hurdle that seems to come up is WHAT to delegate.

Tip

Keep a log for at least two weeks, ideally a month of all your time, personal and professional. Be sure to item all your commitments outside of work for example kids swim lessons, planned gym sessions, date nights etc. Be sure to log or highlight business activities that bring financial benefit/ growth alongside the admin tasks that don't directly impact the business growth. Take notes of times you complete these tasks and see if these impact on personal commitments or if this time would be better spent on the things that add to the success of your SME. It may also be worth running alongside this a separate list of goals you would like to achieve in this time.

At the end of the log, take out the goal list, tick off the things you achieved and take a bit of time to analyse the log. This should hopefully help you reflect on your time and how you could fuel your business growth in the future with the power of delegation. I have added a spreadsheet that you can download and help you map your time, it was something I made a while back to help another client decide what to outsource. Please feel free to contact me if you would like a free no obligation discovery call to explore your requirements.
